Bob's Big Boy
4211 Riverside Drive, Toluca Lake

Bob's Big Boy in Toluca Lake is a prime example of the California Coffee Shop style that was prominent in the 1950's. It was built in 1949 by respected local architect Wayne McAllister and is an important transitional design of Late 1940s Moderne. One of the more notable features is the soaring 35-foot sign that is easily viewable from afar. Bob's Big Boy was threatened with possible demolition in 1992; the Conservancy's Modern Committee spearheaded a successful public campaign to save the restaurant. Its owner subsequent decision to return the site to its 1950s splendor has proved an economic boon.
