PRESERVATION ISSUES

The Los Angeles Conservancy works on a vast range of preservation issues throughout Los Angeles County. Some are proactive, others are in response to specific threats to historic resources, but all of our advocacy efforts share a common goal: to protect and revitalize the significant architectural and cultural resources of greater Los Angeles.

This section includes a sampling of our current and past preservation issues. If you'd like information about an issue not listed here, please contact our advocacy staff at 213-430-4217.

If you know of a historic resource that is threatened with demolition or excessive alteration, please let us know. You can e-mail info@laconservancy.org or call 213-623-2489.

On occasion (rarely - typically once or twice a year), the Conservancy asks for help from supporters on issues (letter-writing, etc.). If you would like to know about these urgent issues and how you can help, join the Conservancy's Preservation Action Alert Network. You'll also receive our regular E-News every other month with general updates on issues and events. If you want to join ONLY the Action Alert Network, e-mail us and we'll add you to that list separately, so that you don't also receive E-News. Ambassador Hotel (site of)
3400 Wilshire Blvd., Wilshire Center

Designed by Myron Hunt with later alterations by Paul R. Williams, the Ambassador Hotel was one of Los Angeles' defining historic sites and a main catalyst for the development of Wilshire Boulevard. Built on a former dairy farm miles from downtown, the 24-acre resort hotel was a hit from its opening on New Year's Day 1921. It quickly became a tourist attraction, a fashionable winter residence for East Coast society, and a prominent social center. The Ambassador was home to the Cocoanut Grove nightclub, L.A.'s premier night spot for decades; host to six Academy Award ceremonies and to every U.S. President from Herbert Hoover to Richard Nixon; and the site of the tragic assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. The hotel closed in 1989. After a fierce preservation battle spanning two decades, the building was demolished by the Los Angeles Unified School District in 2006.
